Cake presentation to launch the Big Fair Bake

To mark the launch of the Fairtrade Foundation’s two week Big Fair Bake campaign, on 24th September Ealing Fairtrade Group volunteers presented the Mayor and Mayoress of Ealing, Councillor Mohammad Aslam and Mrs Majeeda Aslam, with a specially crafted cake made with Fairtrade ingredients kindly donated by the Co-op Southall. Stephen Pound, MP for Ealing North, was also present.

Both the Mayor and Stephen Pound pledged their continuing support for fairtrade, and the cake was not cut, but was kept for display at a trade meeting to be hosted by the Mayor at the Town Hall on the 27th Sept.

The group also arranged a great spread of delicious homemade Fairtrade cakes for a Big Fair Bake Sale at Ealing council’s Perceval House, which managed to raise around £90 for the Fairtrade Innovation Fund. Our experienced, as well as novice bakers (!) gave up their time to create the most delicious recipes, including some featured on the Big Fair Bake site! As well as treating Ealing residents, we helped raise better awareness of Fairtrade and the projects we engage in

If you’d like to join in with the Fairtrade baking action, some delicious recipes can be found on our Recipes page plus loads more on the Fairtrade Foundation’s Big Fair Bake website.

Back Fairtrade with the Big Fair Bake!

Back Fairtrade with the Big Fair Bake!

Between September 24th and October 7th, everyone in Ealing can get involved in the Big Fair Bake campaign in aid of the Fairtrade Innovation fund.

The 2 week campaign is an opportunity for anyone in the borough, whether blessed with baking skills or just with a taste for lovingly baked cakes, to show their support for the farmers who bring us the cocoa, sugar, and other ingredients that go into the mixer.

Buying Fairtrade ingredients means a fair deal for those farmers. The Fairtrade Innovation Fund brings Fairtrade to more disadvantaged farmers, workers and their families in the developing world. By baking, sharing and enjoying wonderful creations made from Fairtrade ingredients, anyone in the borough will help guarantee them a fair price for their work, safety from exploitation, as well as a little extra spent on vital community projects such as schools, hospitals and clean drinking water.

How can Ealing residents get involved?

Jackie Whitaker, co-ordinator of the Ealing Fairtrade group, says: “You may want to bake and share your delicious Fairtrade creations with your local community, friends and family. Or you might like to go one step further to support Fairtrade by selling your cakes and donating the profits to the Fairtrade Innovation Fund.”

To mark the launch of the Big Fair Bake campaign, the Mayor and Mayoress of Ealing, Councillor Mohammad Aslam and Mrs Majeeda Aslam will be presented, on Monday 24th at Ealing Town Hall, with a specially crafted cake made with Fairtrade ingredients kindly donated by the Co-op Southall.

Jackie adds: “Many boroughs across the UK will also be taking part in the Big Fair Bake. Celebrity bakers such as Mary Berry, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Annabel Karmel have also got involved by creating recipes for baked goodies inspired by stories of the farmers. Some yummy and simple recipes can be found on our Recipes page plus loads more on the Fairtrade Foundation’s Big Fair Bake website, so why not get baking?!
